Motivational Management Overview

"I have told you how to do that a hundred times"

It's quicker to do it myself"

How many times have you heard those statements - have you made them yourself?  If so read on:

Traditional management models and management development training do not meet the requirements of the Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure industries.  Current management models are too complicated, and the management development training is aimed at pure managers rather than managers with vocational skills.  These industries need to develop their own industry specific management model, for two reasons.  Firstly the key employees within this sector – those who generate income by interfacing with the customer – are the lowest paid, often on the minimum wage. These employees are expected to be great communicators and ambassadors for the business, and so need to be motivated.  The traditional hierarchical management structure, based on greed and fear, does not do this, so a new approach needs to be established providing “Motivational Management”.  Within this model the management role is to support the team, enabling it to anticipate and excel at surpassing customer expectations for both the product and the service.  The style of management must be non-directive rather than directive.

Secondly promotion within the sector is based on technical skills, and these technicians are rarely given the opportunity to develop new management skills when they are promoted into a position that gives them responsibility over others.  Their only role model may well be their previous line manager who may also lack the necessary management skills to motivate the team.

This leads to businesses trying to patch up their deficiencies in management skills, by developing “management speak” and trying to be a “one minute manager”. These merely address the symptoms of the disease, rather than providing a cure.

The new management model needs to be developed to meet the requirements of the Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure industries, it needs to be holistic, straightforward, understandable and industry specific.  It also needs to embrace the ethos of coaching as this is the key to supporting management change, and to motivation.

Coaching to Success has developed the motivational business model.  Matching this model will ensure that you achieve what you want out of life, and that your business supports your personal aims.  The new model is based on years of practical experience, and has been shown to be effective in every business we have worked with.  Matching the new motivational management model will ensure that your business benefits from lower staff turnover, higher morale, better customer service, improved staff productivity and a better bottom line.

The Motivational Business Model must achieve 5 Prime Aims to be effective in motivating all employees, please click on Prime Aim to get more details:

 1.  All managers treat their area of responsibility as their own business, with business and personal aims, which they share with their team.

2. All employees know and understand what is expected of them.

3.  All employees have the skills and abilities to deliver on those expectations.

4.  All employees are given feedback, and are supported by the organisation to develop the capacity to meet future expectations

5.  All employees have the opportunity to discuss and contribute to departmental, team and individual objectives.

The 5 Prime Aims are all process driven, and so are easy to understand and use, however the Motivational Manager also needs to understand behaviour and be a great communicator, so the second part of the toolkit you will need is Business Coaching, which acts as non-directive support for all the management processes.
