The Use of Questions

When discussing the GROW technique we kept talking about using questions.  This is a big subject and perhaps the best way to approach it is to look at some possible questions you might use at each stage of the process.  Please note that these are all open questions - demanding an answer that is not yes or no.

G.  Goals

  • What reasons can you give for your poor performance?

  • Which of these reasons you have identified are under your control?

  • Why are those factors not under your control?

  • Which is the most important reason for poor performance from all those you have identified?

  • What outcome do you expect from this conversation?

R.  Reality

  • What in detail is the main reason for your performance?

  • How much impact does your performance have on other members of the team?

  • Why does your performance have so much impact?

  • How important is it to you that you improve your performance?

  • Will you get any personal gain from improving performance?

  • What has stopped you doing anything about this in the past?

O.  Options

  • What are all the different ways you can approach this issue?

  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of each of these?

  • When will you make a list of all your options?

  • What else could you do?

  • What would you do if you could start again with a clean sheet?

  • Which of these solutions appeals to you the most, or feels best to you?

W.  When

  • When are you going to start and finish each action step?

  • What could happen to stop you achieving your objective?

  • What support do you need and from whom?

  • What commitment do you have to achieve this from 1 to 10?

  • What could you do to make that a 10?

  • Is there anything else you want to discuss?
