Motivational Management Prime Aim 2

All employees know and understand exactly what is expected of them.

The second prime aim seems pretty obvious really, however, can you remember a time when you were asked to do something and you did not really understand how you were supposed to do it?  I am sure we have all been in that position.  You feel nervous, and unsure of yourself – you think, ”Why didn’t they tell me exactly what they wanted?”  The situation hardly motivated you to do the job well.  I suppose it is a bit like building flat pack furniture – exasperating, but why?  In most cases the instructions are not sufficiently detailed to tell you exactly how to do it, you are left with too many grey areas, and too many choices.  Almost inevitably when faced with choices you plump for the wrong one, and end up losing your temper.  If you had been given explicit instructions, you would have finished in half the time and been very happy with the furniture and the building process.  Can you see that it is essential that if people are going to be motivated to do a job, that they know exactly what is expected of them.

The other important part of this second prime aim is that all employees also understand what is expected of them.  Why do you want them to do the job exactly this way?  What would happen if they did it another way?  People do not like to learn by rote, a reason for what they are learning makes the process so much easier.  “Only fill wine glasses half full whenever you pour wine for a customer.”  This explains exactly what is expected of a waiter/ess, however if you were to explain the reason for this, “We only fill wine glasses half full as it allows the customer to smell the wine properly and also it allows them to swill the wine around in the glass, to mix it with more air, so that the taste is enhanced.”  That individual now knows and understands exactly what is expected of them, and they are motivated even more by learning more about their job.

These principles sounds good, but how do I actually do this?
