Business Coaching Overview

"Coaching is unlocking a person's potential to
maximise their own performance. It is helping them
to learn rather than teaching them" . . .Timothy
Gallwey
The management section of the "Motivational Management"
business model is totally process driven, and as such
is non-directive, it does not rely on a manager telling
someone else what to do. Once all the processes are
in place then all the manager needs to do is to ensure
that the processes are adhered to. But is that enough?
In surveys carried out by Myles Downey, founder of The
School of Coaching, people involved in business estimated
that they and their management team only worked to 40%
of their potential. What an amazing state of affairs!
So even with all the processes in place your business
will only work to 40% of its potential. How can you
deal with this, is it a fault of your management recruitment?
Can human resource consultants provide the answer through
improved human resource management? The evidence shows
that the only way to improve performance at this stage
is through business coaching.
The theory of coaching believes that everyone is capable
of great performance within realistic limits, and that
all individuals are capable of learning. So the performance
rate of 40% can be improved dramatically.
Timothy Gallwey put this concept simply as:
Potential - Interference = Performance
A person’s
potential is limited by interference, interference is
all behavioural, it is like negative conditioning from
previous workplaces, we can teach people skills, but
we cannot change behaviour - only the individual can change
their own behaviour. The interference limiting performance
is nothing to do with training; it is all to do with
behaviour and the lack of motivation within an individual.
Many people find that performing exceptionally is outside
their individual comfort zone.
If you are
managing a busy hotel, restaurant, pub or any other
hospitality, tourism or leisure business, how can you
manage your team so that they operate at more than 40%
of their potential? The first thing you can do is overhaul
your Human Resource management procedures to ensure
that in all cases of team or management recruitment
you recruit for behaviour. You should not even consider
someone who does not have the necessary skills.
If you still
find that team members are unable to perform as well
as you hope, your only practical answer is Business
Coaching. Non-directive Business Coaching can help people
change their behavioural patterns and so remove the
interference and greatly improve performance.
Every person
with management responsibility needs to be able to use
Business Coaching techniques to coach those responsible
to them; this is the most important ability they need
to develop. To find out more about some of the techniques
you can use look at the sections on the GROW
Technique, the Use of Questions
and Understanding Behaviour.
