Charles Trevor-Roper
How did Charles develop his ideas about Management and Coaching?

Charles Trevor-Roper was educated at Wellington College (which he hated) and Reading University (which he loved). He enjoyed his time at Reading so much that he stayed there for seven years, completing an undergraduate honours degree, a postgraduate degree and starting a career as a lecturer. During this period Charles demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit by opening a discotheque, called the Thing-a-me-jig Club, in a cellar the centre of Reading, just behind the John Lewis store. This was in 1967, and in the same year Charles married Carol, having met her in the discotheque. So Charles spent the late sixties studying by day and having fun by night. This idyll ended when Charles took up a short term contract to lecture in Animal Nutrition at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad.
On returning from the West Indies Charles had to decide between staying in the academic world and moving into the Agricultural support / advisory industry. Instead he lost all presence of mind and went into the hospitality industry full time. He, with help, converted a derelict mill site at Sindlesham, near Reading, into a restaurant for 100 and a club for 200. He ran this from 1971 until 1980. It was a very successful venture; the building now forms the basis of the Queens Moat House at Lower Earley. During their time at Sindlesham Charles and Carol developed an overwhelming interest in food and wine. This led to them selling Sindlesham and moving to Knights Farm Restaurant at Burghfield, and later in 1986 to Brookdale House in South Devon, a small country house hotel. Both enterprises were successful gaining very strong “Good Food Guide” entries, Michelin Red M’s (now bib gourmande) and three AA rosettes.
In 2000, Charles decided to use his experience within the industry and his previous university experience to focus on delivering training and development into hospitality businesses in the South West. He became a qualified trainer, executive coach and NVQ assessor. Since 2000 Charles has worked with and managed projects for South West Tourism, Tourism Skills Network, Devon County Council, Best Practice Forum and Enterprise South Devon. He also works with many private clients in the South West. Charles specialises in people management and development and in 2008 had a book published “Motivational Management Made Easy for Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure”.
